When The Light Never Turns Green....
Jun 20, 2025When I was in college, I got a job at a towny bar where we all got high at the end of our shifts and would drive over to IHOP for breakfast together at 4 a.m. I’m not saying that was right—I’m just saying...
One night, I found myself stuck at a red light on a back road for what felt like ten minutes. I was convinced the light was broken, so after waiting a significant amount of time, I drove through it.
A few minutes later, I got pulled over.
My co-workers had seen me sitting at that red light—with a cop behind me—and couldn’t believe I ran it. When I finally got to IHOP, they were beside themselves that I went through a red light with a cop right there.
I was oblivious in that moment. I never checked my rearview mirror.
When the cop pulled me over, he hardly had words. He just asked, “What happened?”
I explained that I thought the red light was broken. That I’d been sitting there, waiting on a light that would never change.
And he knew that was true…
Because I had waited. I sat there and honored the red light—until I said “fuck it” and drove straight through.
He didn’t give me a ticket.
How could he?
He said, “If you’re that impatient, take a different road next time.”
And so I did.
And so I have.
This month’s energies remind me of that moment in time.
I’ve run more red lights than most—and I don’t care. I know when I get to break the rules.
Like when I was taking my friend to the ER and got stuck at a red light. No cars in sight. Middle of the night.
I learned that rules can and should be broken when the moment calls for it.
I don’t wait at red lights when I know I need to move through them.
My friends screamed at me on the way to the ER. It’s not like I didn’t stop—I treated it like a stop sign and kept going. Any sane cop would understand that the emergency mattered more than the rule if I was respectful in the way I broke it.
I learned that rules aren’t universal laws. Sometimes you’re meant to break them.
So, what rules are holding you back?
What red stoplight are you waiting at, hoping it turns green?
You don’t need a green light to go. I get that red, yellow, green lights keep us safe. I follow the lights 99% of the time. But 1% of the time, they’re broken. Useless. Harmful.
In Texas, the speed limit on the highway is 80 mph. In Chicago, it’s 55.
In Texas, there are blinking yellow left arrows that mean yield.
In Chicago, the yellow left arrow never blinks.
Rules are made up. They aren’t universal laws. And yes, our government can align with sacred laws and make up other ones. Just know that karmas runs on Universal Laws.
You have to know the difference.
If this stirred something in you, I dive deeper into this story—and how it connects to breaking energetic and emotional “rules”—in the full version on my podcast.
